Former Marine opens Clive waxing studio

Jason Gast opened his first Waxing the City studio last summer, and the former Marine has plans to expand the business with more locations in central Iowa.

“I heard about it and decided that it was a brilliant idea,” he said. “I have friends who own salons and they said waxing is great money, but now this service is becoming more individualized, like when tanning and nails were parts of salons, but now they are their own businesses.”

“I own a lot of franchise rights, so I plan to open one in Ankeny, downtown Des Moines, Ames, Iowa City and possibly other places.”

Gast spoke with The Des Moines Register about his business.

Yocum makes smooth move from oil business to waxing studios

Tim Yocum is no longer an oil mogul, but he's becoming a waxing studio king.

Yocum sold his family's St. Paul-based Yocum Oil Co. in 2014 and partnered with one of his executives, Wes Hallberg, to open Waxing the City studios in Minnesota.

The two have opened one studio in Golden Valley and acquired another in Highland Park. They have plans to open in Richfield, Eagan and Dinkytown by the end of the year and hold franchise rights to five more studios in Minnesota.

No Gender Bias Figured Into What These Franchisees Chose to Do

Tim Yocum and Wes Hallberg were looking for a deal, not anyone's approval. So, after operating, then selling, a successful Midwest-based independent oil operation that included ten franchised Holiday Stationstores -- a convenience store chain -- the partners looked for opportunities in the Minnesota Twin Cities area. What they decided on was, um, not exactly predictable: They purchased the rights to open ten Waxing the City Studios in the North Star State. Study Shows Waxing Habits Change Direction with Age

HASTINGS, Minn., May 19, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- While most young waxers start off smoothing their lower regions and chests, later in life they are compelled to head north to groom more visible features, according to research conducted by a national waxing studio franchise. 

Overall, the study found that waxing is prevalent in the general population and most common among women. While 90 percent of today's waxers are women, the number of men waxing their chests, backs, ears, nose and areas south of the equator is also steadily increasing. Apparently – a smooth and hairless lower region is a high priority for a majority of consumers – the research shows about 1 in 10 are doing a bikini or Brazilian wax.

SMOOTH OPERATOR: Waxing the City is Anytime Fitness’ new growth vehicle.

The founders of Anytime Fitness hope to make the world a little less hairy. The world’s fastest-growing fitness club franchise acquired Waxing the City, a Denver-based chain of body waxing salons, in October, and opened a location in Woodbury soon after.

Waxing the City had just five locations nationwide, but Anytime Fitness CEO and co-founder Chuck Runyon says he and co-founder/President Dave Mortensen see an opening.

“Ten years ago, we were a fitness company. Now, we’re a franchise company,” says Runyon. The systems they developed with Anytime Fitness can be adapted to other kinds of businesses, he says.

Anytime Fitness Buys Salon Chain, Plans Rapid Growth

Hastings-based fitness center chain Anytime Fitness said Monday that it has acquired Waxing the City, a Denver-based salon chain that specializes in waxing and hair-removal services.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Waxing the City offers facial and body waxing services for women and men. It currently has four locations in the Denver area and one salon in Dallas, and it intends to open its first Minnesota location in Woodbury in mid-December.

Anytime Fitness acquires Waxing the City

Anytime Fitness Inc. said Monday it has bought Waxing the City, a small chain of salons dedicated to waxing and hair removal services.

Terms of the deal were not announced.

Denver-based Waxing the City was founded nine years ago and now has four locations in the Denver area and one in Dallas. Its first Minnesota location is expected to open next month in Woodbury.

Hastings-based Anytime Fitness said the purchase is part of its strategy to expand into "recession-resilient industries that make a difference in people's lives."

C.J.: Fitness guys make a smooth move

Corporate HQ of Anytime Fitness was more fun than working out when I was in Hastings to interview co-founders Chuck Runyon and Dave Mortensen. They were getting intimately acquainted with their new franchise, Waxing the City, which has four salons in Denver and one in Dallas. Runyon and Mortensen have purchased majority ownership rights in the waxing company. In December, Minnesota will get its first Waxing the City salon when they open one in Woodbury.
