Far, far gone are the days when Brazilian waxing was reserved for those with a vagina. After all, everyone deserves to feel confident, groomed, and oh-so-sexy. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned pro, this male Brazilian waxing guide is here to spill the beans on everything you need to know about getting a male Brazilian wax.
What is a male Brazilian wax?
A Brazilian wax for men and women is similar: A Brazilian wax removes all the hair in your pubic area, from front to back and everything in between. This includes the shaft, scrotum, inner buttocks, and outer buttocks. Some men like to leave a thin strip or a triangle of hair above the penis.
How is a men’s Brazilian waxing treatment different from women’s?
A male Brazilian wax treatment isn’t all that different from the waxing process for women. There’s no specific “male Brazilian wax etiquette” you need to know about.
Really, the main difference is that men tend to have more — and thicker — body hair. But there’s no such thing as too hairy at Waxing the City. Our Cerologists have performed services on thousands of men and have seen it all.
What to expect during a male waxing service
As we said, the process for everyone — those with penises and vaginas — is similar and quite simple:
- Once you’ve arrived at the studio, your Cerologist will show you to the room.
- They will then give you a skin care cleansing wipe and a privacy sheet. The wipe is to clean your intimate area prior to waxing — especially helpful if you’re coming to the studio after a gym sesh, midday, or after work.
- The Cerologist will then leave the room so that you can undress from the waist down. Once you’re undressed, you can cover yourself with the privacy sheet. If you’re worried about your Cerologist seeing you in all your hairy glory, don’t be. They are seasoned professionals who have encountered every scenario imaginable and are entirely non-judgmental about it. Remember, they specialize in Brazilian waxing and perform these services daily. So, there’s absolutely no need for self-consciousness. Remember, you are beautiful just the way you are!
- Your Cerologist will knock on the door after several minutes and ask if you’re ready. They will then direct you through the entire waxing process and different positioning so that they can remove any and all unwanted hair.
- They will wax hair from the front of the pubic bone, around the external genitals, between the upper thighs, and around the anus. Be sure to communicate to your Cerologist exactly how much hair you want removed. Depending on your preferences, you can choose to have all hair in the area removed or leave a small strip in the front. The entirety of the waxing process will take about 45 minutes.
Benefits of getting a male Brazilian wax
The most obvious benefit of getting a Brazilian wax for guys and gals is that it can enhance your grooming game and make you look and feel more confident. However, it goes beyond just appearances.
Having a hair-free pubic area can make certain activities comfortable and hygienic. If you feel that having hair in that area makes you feel less aroused or can be a turn-off, a Brazilian wax for men can be a significant boost to your sexual confidence.
Other benefits include:
- It’s an effective hair removal treatment: When you wax consistently, your body hair will likely grow back finer and sparser over time, so you’ll look better even between hair removal sessions.
- Better skin results: Some men find that shaving the pubic area can lead to ingrown hairs and irritation, but waxing can minimize or eliminate those issues. Plus, waxing is its own step in your exfoliation routine, helping you remove dead skin cells and other impurities that can clog pores to reveal brighter, glowing skin.
- It’s efficient: While a Brazilian wax can sound daunting, a professional waxer who knows what they’re doing can make the process quick and efficient. They’ll ensure you get the best possible results with minimal effort. Plus, they can reach areas on your body that you physically can’t.
- Shaving is more expensive over time: Most people swap out their razor blades less than once a month, yet skin experts recommend doing so after just a few shaves! Since waxing removes hair from the root, smooth results last longer. In contrast, shaving might need to be done every few days, or daily, to maintain smooth skin, leading to more frequent purchases of razors, blades, and shaving cream.
- Waxing is long-lasting: A Brazilian wax typically lasts 3 to 4 weeks. This can vary depending on the style of Brazilian wax and your personal preferences. People who get a Brazilian wax regularly might find that they can go 5 to 6 weeks between hair removal appointments, as waxing consistently can slow the rate of regrowth.
How to prepare for a male Brazilian wax treatment
For the best outcome, there are some steps you can take in the days ahead of your appointment:
- Prep the skin: We recommend exfoliating the pubic area several days prior to your appointment. Thoroughly clean the area and make sure to moisturize. However, avoid greasy or heavy lotions or oils if possible.
- Grow it out: Another thing to keep in mind is that hair needs to be at least 1/4″ to 1/2″ long (like a grain of rice) for effective waxing. For most people, this means waiting for 2 to 4 weeks from the last time you shaved.
Stay out of the sun: We recommend that you avoid extreme sun exposure for 48 hours prior to and after you wax. If you are getting a spray tan we would recommend getting your tan 1 to 2 days after your wax. This helps ensure your skin is hair free and has had time to recover.
How much does male Brazilian waxing hurt?
Everyone has a different scale for pain tolerance. What’s painful for one person may not affect another person as much.
However, at Waxing the City, both our wax and our process work together to offer you the most comfortable waxing service possible. If you’re still worried about managing sensitivity, we recommend taking an ibuprofen or aspirin roughly 30 minutes before your appointment to help maximize your comfort.
Pro-tip: Waxing more frequently will help with sensitivity as hair grows back finer and sparser!
Brazilian waxing for men: Aftercare
If your pubic area feels sensitive after a Brazilian wax treatment (which is totally normal, especially after your first time), there are a few things that can help. Cold compresses and cooling gels can soothe the skin. Plus, cold packs can also help close the skin’s pores.
Wear loose clothing and avoid activities that might cause friction or chafing. After a few days or up to a week, exfoliate using a light scrub or gentle exfoliating serum and continue exfoliation every few days until your next wax.
Final word on Brazilian waxing for men
There’s a misconception that men don’t get Brazilian or other waxes, but this isn’t true. In fact, more and more men are getting waxing services every year. Male, female, trans or non-binary — no matter how you identify — Waxing the City’s got you covered.
Every service we offer caters to clients with a penis or a vagina, from body hair removal and face waxing to skin, brow, and lash care. And if it’s your first time, you’ll get 20% off your treatment. Find the location nearest you to book an appointment.
Frequently Asked Questions
The beauty of waxing is knowing you’ll be hair-free for a minimum of 1 to 2 weeks following your wax appointment. That said, waxing is a process, and the more consistently you do it the better the results. Expect quicker regrowth in the waxed area after the first treatment, but month after month you will start to see the hair stay away for longer periods of time.
It lasts much longer than shaving, as shaving only removes the external portion of hair, while waxing removes the entire hair in one piece. On average, we recommend getting a Brazilian wax about every 4 weeks.
Hair that’s longer than 1/2” can make waxing more complicated, as it’s prone to breakage when waxed off for first-timers. This means the follicle won’t be removed and your results won’t last as long. Long hair can also cover up other hairs during a wax, which requires repeated waxes of the same area. We suggest hair be 1/4″ to 1/2” long for effective waxing.
Prices and services vary by location, so let’s find a Waxing the City location in your area.
Here are a few things to keep in mind before a men’s Brazilian waxing session:
- Make sure to avoid heavy lotions or oils in the area you’re having waxed.
- Avoid shaving the area you’re planning to have waxed, as it can irritate the skin, and of course, it will leave the hair too short to wax properly.
- In order to ensure the most comfortable wax experience, we recommend that you avoid sun exposure for 48 hours before and after your waxing service.
- Avoid drinking a big cup of coffee before your next waxing service, as caffeine can increase your sensitivity levels.
In order to ensure the most comfortable wax experience, we recommend that you avoid sun exposure for 48 hours before and after your wax.
If you’re getting a spray tan, we recommend doing so after your waxing service. Doing so before might result in removal of the color from your skin, leaving it splotchy and irritated.
Wear whatever will make you comfortable during your wax. However, underwear with the least amount of coverage is recommended. We encourage you to leave your top-shelf underwear at home to avoid getting any wax on your favorite pair. We also provide complimentary disposable underwear if you’d prefer — just ask your Cerologist!
Our licensed cosmetologists and estheticians are not only waxing and beauty specialists — they are the ultimate professionals at their craft. To reflect their expertise, we created our own name: Cerologist. Looking for the definition of a Cerologist? Cerologist combines cera (Latin for wax) with ologist (to indicate their waxing authority and education).
Certain health medications, isotretinoin, or tretinoin (aka retinoic acid) can thin your skin, causing potential for tearing during a Brazilian wax or other hair removal treatment. Let your Cerologist know if you’re taking or applying any prescriptions.
There are a few things you might see in the pubic and buttocks region post-Brazilian wax treatment, and they’re totally normal! These include:
- Bumps: Irritated skin may cause some bumps to appear, but they’ll likely go away on their own within hours or days. As part of your Brazilian wax aftercare, try post-Brazilian wax serum to help soothe the skin if needed. Just ask your Cerologist to point you in the right direction.
- Redness: Skin redness can disappear anywhere between a few minutes to a few days.
- Itching: Try not to scratch. Try skin care products like aloe vera gel or Fur® Oil to help soothe the skin.
- Stubble or ingrown hairs: Everyone’s hair grows in different cycles, so it’s possible that hairs below the skin’s surface may sprout after your Brazilian wax. Sometimes, dry or brittle hair can break during a Brazilian wax service, so be sure to keep everything moisturized .To help prevent ingrown hairs (or further skin irritation), we recommend using our Post Wax Serum or ingrown hair exfoliating pads.
