Why does skin change during pregnancy?

Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and during pregnancy, it loves to show off what’s happening inside. With surging hormones like estrogen and progesterone, you may notice changes from the famous pregnancy glow to unexpected breakouts and discoloration. Whether you have nine months of gorgeous glowing, clear skin or are dealing with unexpected breakouts, these changes are totally normal.

Hormones affect skin during pregnancy, and the rest of your body too. If you’re between four and nine weeks pregnant, these increasing hormone levels can also lead to morning sickness — not so fun. But don’t worry. Understanding the reasons behind skin, mood and health changes can make these fluctuations a bit easier.

Here are a few common skin changes that might show up for you while pregnant:

  • Clearer complexion (oh hey, pregnancy glow!)
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Discoloration or dark patches (sometimes called melasma)
  • Breakouts
  • Stretch marks
  • New moles or skin tags

Common pregnancy skin conditions

The most common skin conditions women experience during pregnancy are acne, dark spots, and dry, itchy skin. If you have a pre-existing condition like eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea, you may also see fluctuations in your usual symptoms; in these cases, it’s especially important to check in with your doctor about the skin changes you might be seeing. Every woman’s body and health is unique, which means the products and ingredients you include in your skincare line-up should match up with your own personal skin type and needs.

Some ingredients in skincare products affect health — here’s how to refine your essentials

Researching off-limits food and beverages is a common starting point when making adjustments to your routine during pregnancy. But did you know your skincare lineup deserves a second look, too? We’re not saying you should toss your entire beauty arsenal and start over (we all have our ride-or-die products) — but it’s essential to know which ingredients are pregnancy-friendly.

There are plenty of pregnancy-safe food items, beauty products, and household essentials out there, and chances are, you can continue to use much or some of what you already have with peace of mind. When thinking about which types of skincare to avoid during pregnancy, start by getting curious. There are some skincare products and ingredients that are known to be unsafe during pregnancy, and ingredients with known or suspected risks should be avoided during this time. Here’s why: Your skin absorbs ingredients that can eventually reach your bloodstream, which can affect your developing baby. Remember, what you put on your body is just as important as what you put in it!

Pregnancy skin care dos and don’ts:

While skincare during pregnancy can look similar to your existing routine, there are certain products that you should make an effort to use more regularly, if you don’t already. Depending on which skin issues you’re facing, some may be more important to incorporate than others. Always check with your doctor about what is safe for you, as this can vary for each person.

These products are typically safe to include in your routine:

  • Sunscreen
  • Moisturizer
  • Gentle face cleanser / acne-fighting cleanser
  • Acne treatment (if necessary)
  • Exfoliant

Treatments and skincare products to avoid during pregnancy:

  • Laser treatment
  • Botox
  • Chemical peels
  • Retinol-based products

What are the skincare ingredients to avoid while pregnant?

When deciding which products to include into your pregnancy-safe skincare routine, there are certain ingredients you should avoid. These ingredients have associated risks when used while pregnant. While some are safe in small doses, always consult your doctor to ensure your routine is baby-friendly.

The main ingredients to steer clear of include:

  • Retinoids: Products that contain high dosage of retinoids or retinol should be avoided during pregnancy. This could also include products that have a high dosage of vitamin A. There have been birth defects linked to higher doses of retinoids and prescription retinoids, like Accutane. High-dosage retinoids can pose a 20-35% risk of severe congenital defects.

  • Salicylic Acid: Products that contain salicylic acid are normally used to treat acne but a high dosage, like in peels and some oral medications, are unsafe during pregnancy. Anything with 2% or less of salicylic acid is generally okay, but anything over that dosage should be avoided.

  • Hydroquinone: Often used as a skin lightening agent or to reduce skin pigmentation, hydroquinone is often used to treat melasma and chloasma. It is absorbed through the skin at very high rates. Although there is no proven link between congenital defects or side effects, it is still significantly absorbed by the body, especially when compared to other ingredients. It’s best to limit your exposure.

  • Phthalates: This ingredient is found in many beauty and personal products. When studied in animals, it has shown serious reproductive and hormone dysfunction. Phthalates are currently under human study and researchers are exploring its potential role in congenital reproductive health. Makeup and cosmetics are generally the top source of phthalate exposure.
