Whether you’re Brazilian-curious or have already booked your first waxing treatment, follow these tips for pre-wax care for men and male waxing aftercare.
How to prepare for a male Brazilian wax
When it comes to waxing sensitive body parts, nobody loves surprises! If you have a penis and are considering a Brazilian wax for the first time, it’s important to be prepared.
What does a Brazilian wax involve for a man?
Just like for those with a vagina, a male Brazilian wax can involve complete hair removal in the pubic area — front to back. For those with a penis, this typically includes waxing the shaft, scrotum, and inner and outer buttocks. Some men also like their upper thighs waxed, and some prefer to leave a small triangle or “landing strip” of hair just above the penis. Some men choose a modified Brazilian with hair left in the pubic mound. Your Cerologist will work with you to tailor the wax to your preferences, whether you’re going for a totally bare look, a neatly groomed triangle, or something in between.
Besides the specific body parts that are waxed, Brazilian waxes for men are very similar to those for women. That said, every client is different, and men may have thicker or more abundant hair, which can require a slightly tailored approach. There’s no specific “male Brazilian wax etiquette” to worry about, so relax — your Cerologist is here to guide you through the process. They understand that first-timers might feel a little unsure, and they’re pros at putting you at ease. They’ll also give you hair removal aftercare tips to keep your most sensitive skin smooth, sleek, and soft for as long as possible.
Pre-wax care for men
To ensure your waxing session goes smoothly — figuratively and literally! — there are a few things you can do to prepare beforehand. Here’s how to prepare for a male Brazilian wax:
What to do before a wax
- Shower: An important part of pre-wax care for men is to shower or clean the pubic area thoroughly before your appointment.
- Exfoliate: About 24-48 hours before your appointment, scrub your pubic area with an exfoliating body wash and/or body scrubber. This will help prevent dead skin cells from clogging your pores.
- Moisturize: Use a light, gentle moisturizer or lotion after cleansing, avoiding any greasy, heavy lotions or oils.
- Pain prep: If you’re concerned about waxing being painful (hey, it happens!) consider taking a dose of an over-the-counter pain reliever product shortly before your Brazilian. Popping some OTC relief not only helps minimize the actual waxing pain, it can also help reduce inflammation and soreness afterward.
What not to do before a wax
- Trimming or shaving: Don’t do any hair removal for two to four weeks before your Brazilian. You’ll want it to have grown out enough — at least ¼” to ½” long — for waxing to be effective and for the hair to come out completely.
- Tanning: Sadly for sun worshippers, pre-wax care for men does not include catching any rays. For 48 hours before your wax, make sure to keep the area out of sunlight. If you’re a spray tan fan, save it for after your waxing session. Otherwise, your color may become uneven.

Waxing vs. shaving: The benefits of Brazilian wax treatment for men
Beyond the boost in confidence that comes with smooth, glowing skin, waxing your pubic area is a game-changer when it comes to hair removal. Compared to shaving, waxing can be more effective—and more cost-efficient—in the long run. With consistent waxing, many clients notice their hair grows back softer, sparser, and finer over time.
Plus, waxing eliminates the struggles of shaving: no more irritation, ingrown hairs, or prickly stubble. Instead, you’ll enjoy longer-lasting results and a smoother finish. It’s a win-win for your skin and your self-care routine!
Post-waxing care for men: Do’s and don’ts
To keep your skin healthy and your smooth results lasting as long as possible, a little aftercare goes a long way—especially after a Brazilian appointment. Waxing opens pores, so give your skin the TLC that the experts recommend. Our Cerologists recommend following these guidelines in the hours and days after your Brazilian to avoid common post-wax problems like:
- Redness
- Bumps
- Soreness
- Ingrown hairs
Hair removal aftercare 101: What to do after your waxing procedure
It’s 100% normal for your pubic area to feel tender or sensitive after your Brazilian wax. The key to a smooth, happy recovery is following your Cerologist’s advice. Proper aftercare not only soothes your skin but also helps prevent bumps, redness, and pesky ingrown hairs. Here’s what the experts recommend as post-waxing care for men:
- Keep it loose: Wear loose-fitting pants and/or underwear to give your skin room to breathe. Tight clothing can cause friction or chafing.
- Chill out: Soothe any soreness with a cold compress or cooling gel. Cold has the added benefit of helping to close your pores so they will be less irritated.
- Scrub-a-dub: A few days after your appointment, start using a gentle scrub or exfoliating serum every few days, and keep doing so until it’s time to prep for your next wax.
Male waxing aftercare tips: What to avoid after a Brazilian
Following these tips will help make your skin feel better after your treatment, and encourage your just-waxed skin to heal properly and stay oh-so-smooth:
- Splash-free zone: Avoid standing water—like pools, hot tubs, oceans, lakes, and bathtubs—for at least 24 hours post-wax. Standing water can introduce bacteria to open pores and irritate freshly waxed skin.
- Wait to work out: Skip the gym and other sweat-inducing activities for at least six hours to avoid chafing and irritation.
- Choose wisely with moisturizers: Except for post-wax products, stay away from heavy lotions, oils, or other products that could clog pores or inflame your skin. Stick to lightweight, post-wax-specific products recommended by your Cerologist.
- Stay out of the sun: Keep your freshly waxed skin covered for at least 12 hours and wait one to two days before getting a spray tan. UV exposure or tanning products can aggravate sensitive skin.
- Go au naturel: If you normally use any kind of deodorant or antiperspirant products down there, hold off for 24 hours after waxing.
How often should a man get a Brazilian wax?
Waxing certainly lasts longer than other hair removal methods — typically four to six weeks — but exactly how long will depend on your individual hair growth rate, the style of your Brazilian wax, and your personal preferences. Over time, consistent waxing can slow hair regrowth, meaning you might find you can stretch the time between appointments even further.
Want to maximize your results and keep your skin smooth for longer? Proper care before and after your Brazilian wax is key to maintaining healthy, glowing skin.
