If you’ve got questions about waxing, don’t worry—we’ve got the answers you need! The following FAQs will answer any question you have regarding pre-waxing and post-waxing care, our services and hair removal, all in one place. Can’t find the answer you’re looking for? Call a studio near you and ask away!
The million-dollar question, “does waxing hurt?” is nearly impossible to answer! Everyone has a different scale for pain tolerance and what is painful for someone may not bother someone else. However, at Waxing the City, both our wax and our process work together to offer you the most comfortable service possible. If you’re still worried about managing sensitivity, we recommend taking an ibuprofen or aspirin roughly 30 minutes before your appointment to help maximize your comfort. Pro-tip: waxing more frequently will help with sensitivy as hair grows back finer and sparser!
When waxed consistently, hair grows back slower, finer and sparser. Shaving cuts your hair, it doesn’t remove your hair—so the quantity and thickness remain the same. Electrolysis and laser hair removal don’t work for everyone, which makes waxing a fabulous universal alternative. Those treatments are also very expensive, which makes waxing a great option that’s far easier on your bank account.
The beauty of waxing is knowing you’ll be hair-free for a minimum of 1-2 weeks following your wax appointment.
Your hair won’t grow back thicker and darker after waxing, just the opposite! Hair that is removed at the root grows back softer and finer over time.
There is not a waxing age limit or waxing age requirement. However, if you’re under the age of 18, bring a parent or guardian on your first visit as we need their consent.
In order to provide the best experience possible, only the client and Cerologist™ are allowed in the treatment room during an appointment. For clients under the age of 15, we invite a parent or guardian to be on hand.
These medications increase the rate at which your skin exfoliates so waxing could potentially remove skin as well as hair. Please let your Cerologist™ technician know immediately if you are on any medications. Also be aware that chemical peels, laser, and micro-dermabrasion can also affect skin integrity.
There are many medications that affect skin and skin integrity (glycolic acid, lactic acid, benzyl peroxide, salicylic acid, alpha hydroxyl acid, vitamin A, prescribed exfoliating scrubs, antibiotics, hormonal medications, radiation and/or chemotherapy drugs). Please consult with your physician in regards to any medications and how it may affect your waxing experience. Some brand names to be aware of: Adapalene, Avita, Tazorac Avage, Proactiv(e), Differin, Strivectin.
A bikini wax removes hair that extends outside of the panty line or crease of thigh. If you’d like your bikini wax modified, you’re in luck! With a modified bikini wax a thin strip of hair will be left down the middle of the bikini area. A Brazilian bikini wax removes all hair, including the backside.
Waxing the City requires a minimum 24-hour notice* to cancel or change any appointment and a credit card to hold any appointment while booking. Once an appointment is booked – unless we hear otherwise – we’ll expect (and are excited for) you to be there. No-show and cancellations within 24 hours of the appointment may be charged up to the full price of the booked service(s) price (plus tax if applicable) to the credit card with which they were held.
We understand life happens, and sometimes you will need to cancel your appointment within the 24-hour period due to an emergency. We will do our best to give grace in these moments, but we do track all late cancellations and no-shows to ensure our policy is not abused.
*Select Waxing the City studios are independently owned and operated and may have custom cancellation and no-show policies. Please ask the studio directly for more detailed information about their policies.
Our licensed cosmetologists and estheticians are not only waxing specialists, they are the ultimate professionals at their craft. To reflect their expertise, we created our own name: Cerologist. Looking for the definition of a Cerologist? Cerologist combines “cera” (Latin for wax) with “ologist” (to indicate their waxing authority and education).
We do our best to offer a walk-in wax appointment! However, we may not always be able to accommodate walk-ins, so booking your wax ahead of time is the best way to ensure you’ll get the service you want when you need it.
We use two different types of wax, both are incredible. For the face and more sensitive areas of the body, we use a hard wax that shrink wraps and hardens around the hair and lifts from the skin creating a more comfortable experience. We use a traditional soft wax for larger body areas such as legs, arms, chest, and back and it is removed by using a cloth strip.
To ensure the most optimal wax experience, you must prepare for a wax! We recommend exfoliating the area several days prior to your appointment. Thoroughly clean the area and make sure to moisturize while avoiding greasy and heavy lotions or oils. If you’d like more information on how best to prepare for a wax, head to our First Time Visit page.
Hair needs to be at least ¼” to ½” for effective waxing. For most people this means waiting 2-4 weeks (minimum of 2 weeks) from the last time you shaved. The longer you wait, the better the results.
You can absolutely get a wax on your period. You’ll need to wear a tampon during your service, but otherwise it will be business as usual.
Absolutely. We will do everything we can to make our pregnant clients feel as comfortable as possible during their waxing service.
In order to ensure the most comfortable wax experience, we recommend that you avoid sun exposure for 48 hours before and after your wax.
Wear whatever will make you comfortable during your wax. However, underwear with the least amount of coverage is recommended. We encourage you to leave your top-shelf underwear at home to avoid getting any wax on your favorite pair. We also provide complimentary disposable underwear, just ask your Cerologist!
Women may want to think about scheduling their bikini wax appointments during the first two weeks of their cycle as it will help decrease sensitivity. Avoid drinking a big cup of coffee before your next service as caffeine can increase your sensitivity levels!
Avoiding ingrown hairs is easy if you make sure to exfoliate 2-3 times per week. We also offer a variety of products including scrubs, brushes, poufs and oils that can help minimize ingrown hairs.
Your skin may be sensitive following your wax. Any red bumps or irritation should subside within a few hours. Make sure to avoid sun exposure, tanning, hot baths, hot tubs, heavy lotions and exfoliation for 48 hours after your service.
How often you get a wax is slightly dependent on the area, but we recommend waxing every four weeks for the best results.
